What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a science that is based on the principle that there are reflex areas in the feet and hands which correspond to all of the glands, organs, and parts of the body. By stimulating these reflexes properly, many health problems can be alleviated in a natural way. It is a type of preventative maintenance. Reflexology is a serious advance in the health field and is not the same thing as massage.

Reflexology practice has been documented as early as 2330 BC where the ancient Egyptians are believed to have used it. Tomb hieroglyphics depicted the Egyptians giving each other foot and hand treatments

The Ingham Method® was originally developed by the late Eunice Ingham beginning in the mid-1930’s. Her book, “Stories the Feet Can Tell and Stories the Feet Have Told through Reflexology” has been in print for many decades, written in several different languages, and considered a library must-have by dedicated practitioners.

Eunice Ingham’s, nephew, Dwight C. Byers lived and worked with his aunt from the young age of 8. He is now the world’s leading authority on Foot and Hand Reflexology. As the president of the International Institute of Reflexology, he and a select few instructors travel the world teaching reflexology to both laymen and professionals.

The Ingham Method® of Reflexology is used mainly for relaxing stress and tension. In today’s hectic, space-age society, scientific research has proven time and time again, that most health problems are related to stress and tension. Because the practice of reflexology improves nerve and blood supply, the body relaxes and you feel better.

Reflexologists do not use any creams during the actual foot reflexology treatment. Specific thumb and finger techniques are used in order to work the specific reflexes. No condition is made worse from this technique and there are no contra-indications. It just plain feels wonderful and people of all ages love it.

Jane Thomas was trained by Dwight Byers and his grandson, James Pederson at the International Institute of Reflexology in St. Petersburg, Florida. She has also trained under Ted Stansbury of Harrison, Arkansas who is a hand reflexology expert and authored the book Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. The certification process requires 100 hours of practical experience, passing a comprehensive exam and a practical assessment of the reflexologist’s skills in performing the technique on certified instructors.

Reflexology is a unique modality in the health field. Its purpose is not to treat or diagnose for any specific medical disorder, but to promote better health and well being in the same way as an exercise or diet program. Its practice should not be compared to massage or any other kind of manipulative procedure.
